Dan's Easy Fuel Filler Valve Installation

The trouble with using a Great Planes or Dubro fuel filler valve is that it needs to be mounted on the same plane as the carburetor and fuel tank to ensure consistent engine runs. The instructions show that is can be mounted anywhere above or below, but this did not prove reliable for me. I had many inconsistent engine runs that were only cured by relocating the valve to the same level as the tank/carb.

I found an effective way around this. It allows the valve to be mounted any where on the fuselage, thus the valve can be mounted on the bottom of the fuselage of a scale model and it won't spoil the look.  It involves simply running a brass tube in the third (usually unused) hole of the stopper to the bottom of the tank. This tube connects to the valve, and the supply side of the valve that would normally go to the carb is plugged. Use a short length of fuel tubing capped with a solid rivet or a length of music wire for the plug. The sketch shows the details:

The fuel valve located in this manner has other benefits as well.  Any dirt on the end of the filler probe won't be directly in line to the carb after fuelling.  A leak in the valve won't result in a lean engine run.  The only disadvantage I can think of is one additional fuel tube to connect after servicing the tank.  If your valve is located above or below the carb/tank and you experience inconsistent engine runs, you might want to try this method.
