YS Engines - Visitor Comments
I ran YS engines for 10 years in pattern competition so have a lot of experience with them. A few important things are:
1 - Keep them well oiled when not flying (I used castor oil or teflon oil)
2 - Replace the gaskets with leak-free gaskets. I have also made my own gaskets using gasket material from an auto parts store and a 1/8" hole puncher I ordered from 'Staples' stationers.
3 - Make sure the fuel system maintains pressure. It must be completely leak free. Check all lines and connections. I always replaced all fuel lines at the start of each season. I also noticed that tanks lasted approximately 125 flights and would then leak. Always carry a spare tank.
4 - Check the check valve from time to time, I have found that small pieces of nylon from the tank can jam it causing headaches. If you use fuel filters, be sure to use the largest you can find.
5 - Be sure all seals are tight. I once had a leaky air box on a 120 AC cause me a lot of grief and wasted time at the field trying to figure out what was wrong.
6 - They do like nitro, we ran 20 - 30%, sometimes more in the summer.
7 - They also like 4 stroke plugs.
8 - Check the valve clearances, be sure they are correct.
9 - To adjust the needle, turn in until the engine is in a screaming two cycle, then goes a little lean, note that needle position, richen until it starts to blubber in a rich 4 cycle, note that needle position, then set the needle exactly in the middle of the two extreme needle positions. Usually we would not have to touch the needle again all season.
Thanks, Rich
