The Great
Planes Patty Wagstaff Extra
with a Brison
2.4 c.i Engine is the best flying plane I have ever own.
My Patty
Wagstaff Great Planes Model Extra
300s had it's maiden voyage on June 1, 2003 and it is by far the
smoothest plane I have ever owned. I powered this plane with a Brison
2.4 c.i. engine. Following some trimming and electrical issues,
I can quickly see this is going to be my favorite plane. The only
issues I see with this ARF is that the wing tube design for the horizontal
stabilizer is poor and the tail wheel for this model is too small.
I created a shim out of balsa sheeting and placed it in the gap on
the left horizontal stabilizer. This shim has made the stab tight.
I modified the tail wheel assembly and installed a 1.5 inch tail wheel.
I no longer drag my rudder on the ground. After my 37th flight on
the plane (161st on the engine), the engine began making strange noises
at idle. The wrist-pin bearings are shot and the engine has been overhauled
by Brison. The engine has been re-installed and it runs great. The
CG is 1.5 inches aft and the plane weighs in at 16 lbs (14lbs fuselage
& 2lbs main wings) which equates to a wing loading of 31.24 oz/sqft.
Funny, it lands like a glider!
December 20th, 2003 after installing a Brison 3.2 engine and changing the servos in my wing, I took the plan out for a spin. Now this is what flying is all about. I now have unlimited verticals and can fly any maneuver that I have skill to perform. This combination is great!
